King County claims they are taking emergency actions to ensure the safety of everyone at our correctional facilities, based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as Public Health – Seattle & King County. But are they really?
King County states they are working with each of our partners in the criminal justice system – courts, public defenders, prosecutors, corrections, and law enforcement – to quickly and safely decrease the number of people who are in custody to provide our staff more opportunities to ensure everyone’s health and safety. But what they are not doing is testing staff members.
Corrections Officers and Corrections Sergeants are being exposed daily to this deadly virus, and King County Management refuses to test staff when requested by the guild. To date there has been over 66 staff members who have been infected with this virus. When is enough going to be enough? When will King County Leadership step up, and ensure their employees are safe?
Even after the recent COVID outbreak in the Seattle Facility where over a dozen inmates tested positive, King County has refused to test staff members.
